Chinguacousy Township (was the name of the area of what is now known as Brampton in the Peel Region) was void of any real businesses with the exception of the Martin Salisbury tavern and all town business was conducted there. Buffy’s Corners (Main Street and Queen Street) held another tavern from which the intersection was referred to, William Buffy’s tavern, which again, was the only real significant business in the area. It wasn’t until 1834 that a locally-living man named John Elliott set up the area into sellable lots and promptly called the area Brampton (the new name quickly caught on by new residents and it stuck).
